Spring is quickly arriving, well at least for those of us out here in California, and as soon as the days start getting longer my husband and I are drawn to our deck. It’s one of our favorite things to sit out on the deck, enjoy a drink and have a good conversation, away from the distraction of the TV. In our other house I redid our patio and made it a fun place to sit and relax but since we moved into this house I just tossed everything out on the deck and I haven’t given it a second thought. There are always so many projects going on inside the house that by the end of the day I’m too tired to think about the deck decor but it was in desperate need of a deck makeover!
BORING.
Lukckily this month my BHG assignment was “Color” and I knew that I wanted to re-vamp my boring deck and add in some fun color. A challenge I hadn’t thought about is that you can see the deck from our living room, so whatever I did outside had to coordinate with what I have going on inside.
I normally shop Walmart online but I decided to go visit our local store and I ended up finding tons of great stuff! They hadn’t unpacked all the new BHG patio cushions so I had first pick. Of course that also meant I was climbing around the shelves in the garden section and ripping open all the packages (I asked first) but I love what I found! Here’s the pile I came home with, my cart was overflowing!
Because the deck is an extension of our living room I wanted to make it feel like another cozy living space. So first I cleared out all the existing furniture and laid out a rug to define the space.
Next I added the chairs and the couch back into the space. No one except me has ever really liked to sit on the couch because the back is pretty hard, so I took the back cushions from the chairs and added them to the couch. I also replaced the faded and worn out seat cushion with this pretty green one from the new BHG outdoor collection at Walmart.
To replace the cushions on the back of the chairs I used these awesome, double-sided, BHG pillows from Walmart. I love the black and white, it coordinates perfectly with what I have in the house and it’s a great backdrop for any color accent pillow! Talk about a win-win!
I can’t decide which pattern I like best so I have one on each chair. 🙂
The table that used to be in the middle of the furniture was too tall and too small to act as a coffee table so I purchased a coffee table for only $24 (!!!) on Walmart.com and moved the other table to be a side table. It’s a much better use for it and the new coffee table is perfect for the space!
I also had fun accessorizing the space with lots of great BHG planters, available at Walmart, and lots of great plants if found in the store. Our deck gets the direct afternoon sun, which can get up to 100+ degrees in the summer, so while I was in Iowa last summer touring the BHG campus, I asked their gardener what types of plants I should look for, so hopefully this summer my plants will survive, instead of getting cooked in the sun!
I just love this little owl (only available in the store), he makes me smile every time I see him. 🙂 And of course I had to buy this teal planter because I’m naturally drawn to all things teal! (Teal front door, teal TV console, teal laundry room, etc.)
I was also super excited to find these BHG chair cushions at Walmart.com that coordinate perfectly with the other pillows I had purchased!
Okay now I’m going to stop talking and just show you some pictures of our new outdoor living space. I love the way it turned out and I’m seriously drawn out there every afternoon!
What do you think of our new living space? Would you like to join me for some sweet tea or a glass of champagne, talk for hours and watch the sun set?
Would you like to accessorize your deck? Here’s where you can find most of the items –
- Black and white chair cushions
- Couch cushion
- Bar stool cushions
- Coffee table
- Green planter
- Teal planter
- Folding side table (that I painted gold)

Very pretty & relaxing. Colors are great. Now perhaps you could paint that railing to give it a little punch & bring it in to the “party”! Black would pull in all the pretty cushions, or you could match the color of the furniture. It would be an accent “wall”!

That’s a great idea!
