With just 5 weeks before our impending arrival, I thought it would be the perfect timing to share some tips on how to pack an organized diaper bag.
We are planning to take our diaper bag to the hospital with us for delivery “just in case” we need it on the way home. With our first child, I used a regular bag for a diaper bag. It seemed like a good idea at the time, because it was one less thing to purchase. It worked just fine, but with the second baby on the way, I watched diaper bag sales like a hawk and found a great 75% off sale on a super cute {and trendy} Kate Spade diaper bag, similar to this one:

The most important feature for me was lots of pockets. With the big open bag I used with baby #1, I could keep it organized, but my husband struggled. When he needed to find something inside, it was like he inserted a small tornado into the bag instead of his arm. Things ended up everywhere! With this baby, I knew I would need to organize things into pockets if I wanted to keep it simple and together.
Another great learning opportunity for me was to keep only necessities in the bag. You can load it full, or you can load it with what you need.
Here’s what I recommend:
- Diapers
- Wipes & Diaper Cream
- 2 sets of extra clothes {for any normal outing…more depending on duration}
- Burp Cloths
- Nursing Cover {if your baby will let you!}
- Bottles/Pacifiers/formula {if needed}
- A couple of toys {not 10, like 2}
And that’s it! I keep to the bare minimum. As your baby gets older, you’ll of course need snacks and whatnots, but for a newborn, keeping it simple has saved me.
To keep it organized, I loaded the contents by zones. I started with diapers, and added them together, middle up. This helps keep the diapers together and helps you ensure you only grab one diaper at a time. I used the pockets to contain diaper cream and slipped the wipes in next to the diapers.
I folded the little backup clothes as small as I possibly could and rolled them next to the diapers for easy access.
Then I added the feeding items: Nursing Cover, Burp Cloths, toys and Pacifiers.
I hope this helps you when you need to pack your diaper bag or you can pass it along to a friend or family member in need! Feel free to swing by my blog, Pretty Well Organized, for more baby related posts as we wait for Baby #2 to arrive!

PS. I’m super, super pregnant! 5 weeks to go!
A couple weeks ago when I was in Iowa for my Better Homes and Gardens trip, I got to meet Wendy! She is very pregnant, super sweet and I loved her! We sat in my hotel lobby and talked for hours. We took this picture at 12:30am when we decided we should both get to bed. 🙂

Thanks for the tips! I’m due just 2 weeks after you with our first, and getting my diaper bag ready is on my list of things to do before our little guy is here. 🙂 Love your bag too- super cute! (Mine is a Vera Bradley bag I got for 50% off because they were discontinuing the pattern.)

Congratulations to you! And good luck! Packing the diaper bag early was a really great thing to cross off the to-do list 😉

Wow you are a minimalist packer! Do you carry a separate purse for your items (wallet, phone, etc.)? What about stuff for your older kiddo? My diaper bag serves as purse, toddler, and infant bag and boy is it stuffed, even if I try to scale back on my what if scenarios!

I do carry a separate purse (or cross-body bag) for my own things. I don’t have anything for my older daughter–she’s 3 and half and has been potty trained since around her 2nd birthday. I keep a few things in the car for her (a book and a blanket) but I don’t carry them with us when we are out and about.

Where did you get those adorable giraffe diapers? Are they cloth or disposable? Thank you!
Wendy says
They are from the Honest Company–disposable, but biodegradable.
