Simple & Inexpensive Chandelier Makeover

This chandelier was in the house when we purchased it a couple of years ago.  I have never liked it but I haven’t had the money to replace it {chandeliers are expensive!}.  I had it listed on Craigslist for a few months but finally gave up on selling it when I didn’t get a single email!  I decided that this year was the year to give it a make over.

I apologize for these blurry pictures but I realized that I didn’t have an official “before” picture so I had to crop these out of other pictures.

First I removed the glass cups because I felt like they made the chandelier look old fashioned.
Next I asked my husband to remove it from the ceiling and take the chandelier outside.  After he took it down I used Valspar primer and satin black spray paint to paint it.  One of the other things I didn’t like about the chandelier was that it was textured but the Valspar primer worked great for filling in some of the grooves.
After we hung it back up and I added some shades and crystals I purchased at Lowe’s. Here’s what it looks like now!
I love the way it turned out!  For less than $40 I have a “brand new” chandelier that I actually really like!  I’m always amazed at how a few simple changes can completely transform something.
Here’s one last look at the before and after:

Read your chandelier makeover and have a question. When you removed the glass to add the shades, did you attach the shades directly to the bulbs? (I’m assuming that the shades have the wire holders inside to hold it onto the regular shaped bulb). I have a chandelier in my breakfast area that I’d love to update because I totally agree about them besing so expensive! I thought about possibly adding the ‘candle’ look to hold the shades but what you did might be a lot simplier. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks~ Lynn

Yes, the shades are attached directly to the light bulbs. I purchased the shades at Lowes for a few dollars each and they are made for exactly this sort of thing. Before buying the shades I just had the light bulbs exposed and I liked it but I love the look of the shades and I love the way it reflects the light down onto our table. 🙂

I love this! I’m just wondering where you got your white curtains???

IKEA… super cheap. I think it was $20 for the set.

    Hi!

I love your chandelier makeover! I’d love to do that at my house… How did you attach the crystals? Did you drill holes?
    Thanks!
    Bonnie

I didn’t drill any holes, I just twisted the metal on the end of the crystals to use it like a hook. 🙂

Hi! I was wondering how you attached the crystals?

They had hooks on the end of them so I just unfolded the hooks and wrapped them around the chandelier. You could also glue them, I was just too lazy. 🙂

Hi! Love this! Found your post in google images and I’m just wondering if this chandelier is iron? I hate mine and would love to upgrade it with some paint! Thanks!

No, I don’t think it was iron, I’m not sure what kind of material it was, to be honest. If yours is iron though, spray paint will work on it. 🙂

What kind of bulb do the shades clip on onto? I have a similar light fixture but it uses regular bulbs (as in not a teardrop or flame tip) and I’m worried it won’t work.

I can’t remember what kind of bulbs those are but I think you could probably search for shades to fit the type of light bulbs you have. Amazon has a bunch of shades but I know Ballard Designs has some cool ones too.

Looks like you sprayed the chain but did you spray the electrical cord too?

No I don’t usually spray the electrical cord because paint likes to peel off that type of plastic material. I don’t mind the look of the cord.
