Everyone loves a red front door, even I love a red front door, so I was excited when we bought our house, that it had a red front door.
However, as we’ve torn down walls and completely changed the inside of the house, over the last 2 years, I started to feel like the red front door didn’t quite “work” anymore. I thought about painting it dark purple, and found some great inspiration pictures on Pinterest.
But I wasn’t 100% sure about the color so I held off and thought about it some more. As I continued to change/add/makeover things in the house, I started thinking that maybe purple wasn’t the right color. I noticed that I’d been drawn to more blues, especially when making over our eat-in kitchen area and our outdoor living room. We also have a lot of teal in our house, and the inside of the front door is teal, and since blue and teal go together so well, I eventually decided that blue would be the best option for the front door. I wasn’t sure which shade I wanted so I went to Pinterest again. You can see all my inspiration doors HERE but this blue door was my favorite. 🙂
After finding the perfect inspiration door I headed to Lowes to find the perfect color. I brought home two samples but ended up choosing Royal Navy by Valspar. It wasn’t too teal, too gray, too 80’s blue, it was perfect.
I love the way the door turned out and even through the red was pretty, I think the blue is so much more fitting.
I also love they way the blue brings out some of the darker bricks on the porch, the color turned out even better than I’d hoped it would!
What color is your front door? Have you ever thought about painting it? In our last house I painted the door black.
I also painted a friend’s door yellow. I love finding the perfect color for each house. 🙂
Door color is Royal Navy by Valspar.

LOVE the rug!

Thank you! I got it on Overstock. 🙂

That blue color really does bring out the colors in the brick! Love it!
Our house is plain beige vinyl siding so any color would work I guess. I painted our front door a lovely shade of apple green 2 summers ago. Alas it is time to replace the front door and my husband and I are going to go door shopping this weekend. Not sure what color I paint it just yet though…right now I just need a door that works properly 🙂

I love the blue – it’s rich looking, but welcoming too! I would love to know how you painted it. Did you have it sprayed commercially, or did you do it yourself? Our door desperately needs painting as soon as possible – before it gets too cold here in eastern Canada!
Anna says
Thank you. I just used a really good paint brush to paint the door. You can see a whole tutorial for how to paint doors here – https://askannamoseley.com/2012/09/how-to-paint-a-door/. Good luck! 🙂

Such a nice departure from the plain door everyone’s got. 🙂

What color of blue is that door? Paint brand? We absolutely love it!
Anna says
I know it’s a Valspar color from Lowes but I can’t remember the color. I have the can downstairs but I don’t have access to it right now because we have people renting from us. As soon as they leave I will look at the color and get back to you. 🙂
Anna says
Hi Sheila! I hope it’s not too late but I was finally able to go down to my storage closet and look at the color, it’s Royal Navy by Valspar. It’s a really beautiful color, I’m still so glad I chose it. 🙂

I have been looking at several navy blue doors but could not find exactly one I liked until I saw your front door. I have a brick home and the color of the brick is almost identical to yours. In my mind, I have found the right color of paint for the door. I do have one question. What color is your garage door? That is my next step in my makeover.
Anna says
We just recently repainted the house (it was a long time coming). We ended up painting the garage door the same color as the wood, which was a whitish gray color. The trim around the windows is a very similar color to the door color and then the fascia boards and vents we painted a medium greige color. I wish I could post a picture here because it might sound odd but it looks amazing!

Did you ever post a picture? I really would love to see the combination of colors!
Anna says
It’s the 4-7th pictures in the post. 🙂

I love that blue! It looks beautiful with the red brick! Exactly what I’ve been looking for my front door! I also have red brick, but have a front porch, what color would you paint the porch?
Anna says
What color is the rest of the house? If you’d like you can email me a picture (I’m a visual person). My email is askannamoseley (at) hotmail (dot) com.

We are building a house and I’ve been trying to decide for months now what color front door! I love this blue. I have been told by tons of people red. But i feel like everyone has a red door! I want some color. I’ve thought about real and a mustard yellow even i just can’t make myself decide! I’m such a matchy match person. I would love to email you a shot of our house and get your thoughts!!

I’d love to help, email me a picture at askannamoseley (at) hotmail (dot) com. 🙂

I love your door in navy blue! My front door also has similar brass/gold lead in the decorative glass window. The door is currently red with brass hardware, and I would love to repaint it navy blue, but I am unsure about the hardware. I was concerned that the brass lead in the window would clash with a different color hardware – but yours looks great. Can you tell me what color hardware is on your door?
Anna says
I just went with a solid black for the hardware. You could use an oil rubbed bronze though because that would have some of the gold highlights on it. Either one would look good. 🙂
Andrea says
What type paint oil or laytex? And what finish did you use?
Anna says
I just used a regular water-based Valspar paint from Lowe’s.

Our brick is the same as yours. We’ve been contemplating a new door color. Yours is a strong contender. What color shutters do you have? Our shutters are beige; they have to be changed too.
Anna says
We actually didn’t have any shutters on that house but if we had I would have painted them to match the front door, just to tie everything together. 🙂
Berta says
We are repainting our house it’s a form of beige and we thought we’d keep it similar especially after seeing your post with the Val spar blue door it looks really nice! What color is the house? It looks like a beige color.
Anna says
We repainted the house to a greige white color with tan trim. I always really loved the blue door! 🙂
Lynn Sharkey says
Discovered your picture of this navy door on Pinterest and we did the same thing. We have shutters we painted to match and the house looks entirely different in a beautiful way. So happy I found your blog. Lynn

Awesome, thank you for stopping by to say hi! 🙂 I loved this blue door, it is such a great color.
