I am sooooo excited to show you my black and white kitchen makeover reveal! It has been a long time coming but it’s finally here! And just a warning this is a picture heavy post because there’s so much to show you! Before I show you the reveal, let me remind you where we started.
This is what the kitchen looked like before we put in the open shelves. And you’re eyes aren’t going bad, the picture is just blurry because I’m apparently the worst at remembering to taking “before” pictures so this is the best I could find. 🙂
Here’s what it looked like after the open shelves. It was still really ugly with the huge whole above the fridge, the 2 different paint colors on the wall and worst of all the ugly oak cabinets!
Last time I posted about the kitchen I had just filled in the oak grain and this is what it looked like.
And here’s what it looks like today… eeeek, I’m so excited to show you!
It still has a long way to go but it’s WAY better than when we started. I can’t help but scroll back up and then down again to see the transformation, try it, it’s fun. 🙂
Okay obviously it didn’t get like that over night so let me show you the process. Step one was filling in the oak grain, which I showed you how to do in this post. Next came primer.
I used this Valspar primer from Lowes because the guy at the paint counter said it was good for use on cabinets. I used a foam roller to paint it on and I did 2 coats just to make sure I had a good base. I also sanded them down with 200 grit sand paper in between each coat to make the cabinets nice and smooth.
After painting all the bases it was time to paint the doors. Instead of reusing the old doors I decided to change out the cabinet doors with a similar, but slightly more modern style. Ordering new doors also saved me a lot of work because I didn’t have to fill in the grain on them. I set up our garage as a workshop with long strips of scrap wood and finishing nails to hold the cabinets off the ground.
Using the HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer, I sprayed 2 coats of primer on the doors as well, sanding in between each coat.
Using the sprayer made the job so much easier! No joke, on every door I sprayed I was thinking to myself, “Why have I never owned a sprayer before this!? This is so easy!” The job was tedious, no doubt about that, but it wasn’t a hard job.
After 2 coats of primer on the doors I sprayed on 3 coats of paint. I used Old Village Paint in Pure White for the sink and bar cabinets and Black Satin for the island. It’s a very high quality paint so I knew it would be the best choice for our cabinets to prevent peeling, chipping and scratches. In between each coat I sanded down the doors with 200 grit sand paper because I wanted to make sure I ended up with a very smooth surface.
The other thing I wanted to do was to customize the island. The backside of the island, the side you see from the living room, was flat and boring so I ordered 3 panels to add to the back, to make it look more like a piece of furniture than a boring island.
When it was time to add the drawer fronts back on we realized that most of the actual drawers were pretty trashed. I’m not sure what the previous owners were doing to these drawers but it looks like maybe kids were hanging on them because they were ripped up!
My husband made a trip to Lowes and bought some MDF to replace the front of piece of the drawers. It was an easy fix and made our drawers much more sturdy.
Then came the installation and the pulls!
I can’t even tell you how much I love these Williams-Sonoma cup pulls from D. Lawless Hardware, let’s just say it’s A LOT (and they are a steal at 79% off on their site)!!
Okay so the cabinets were coming along great but you may remember that we still had that gaping hole above our refrigerator.
Yeah, that.
To hide the hideousness and make our refrigerator look more “built-in” I hired our contractor to build a wine rack above the fridge. It’s not for storing our good wines (because those have to be chilled) but I though it would look nice and give our kitchen a more custom look.
I love the way it turned out and I think it fills the space nicely. I used the Finish Max sprayer and the Old Village Paint Pure White paint to finish it as well.
Once all the cabinets were finished and the wine rack was installed I painted all the walls in the kitchen white to make it one color, instead of 2. It’s a temporary fix because when we replace the counter tops (I’m currently saving for them) I’m going to tile the wall behind the open shelves, from the refrigerator over to the door on the left.
I can’t wait until we have enough to replace the countertops and add the tile, but until then I think the kitchen is still a huge improvement from where we started! Are you ready… here come lots of pictures…
Here’s a nice little before and after for you, so you don’t have to scroll all the way back to the top to remember how ugly it used to be.
And here’s a little snapshot of what still needs to be done.
Okay, this seriously might be my longest post ever but there’s just one more thing! In celebration of me finishing my kitchen cabinets, I’m giving away a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer to one of you to make your painting jobs so much easier too!!! Yay!!! The kitchen. My kitchen is the ugly cousin to your former kitchen.
Anna says
Haha! 🙂
Kelly T says
There are soooo many uses in the future for this paint sprayer. But right now, it would be awesome for the board and batten trim we just added to a mudroom area. 🙂
Lori says
Looks really nice! I don’t know why you want to replace those countertops though! They are beautiful. Appear to be Corian?
I would use the paint sprayer to redo my bathroom vanities!
Sara S says
Wow that does look just amazing!
Amber at FPH says
It looks fabulous, Anna! I would LOVE to paint my cabinets white but my husband insisted on Bisque appliances so I’m kinda stuck with limited colors. We are still (STILL) working on our kitchen and need to buy two banks of cabinets and I want light since we have poor natural lighting but he’s leaning towards a stain. Well, I’ll be okay with that as long as I get some LIGHT countertops! 😉
Richella Parham says
Oh, Anna. The transformation is just incredible!
Oak cabinetry is wonderful in terms of durability–oak is such a nice, hard wood!–but the wood grain look is just not what we want these days, is it? You did a beautiful job of making your cabinets look smooth and sleek. They’re going to be SMASHING with the Carrara marble, but they already look wonderful!
I really the way your kitchen still looks warm and homey, not cold and clinical, as black and white can sometimes look. I just love following along watching you make the most of this home that God gave you!
Anna says
Thank you so much Richella!
Tina says
What a transformation! Wish I have the courage to do the same to my kitchen.
Maribeth says
Your kitchen is looking magazine-worthy! It looks so clean, bright, and cheerful. You’re not afraid of hard work either–that’s for sure! Thanks for sharing.
Mary S. says
Just moved into a fixer upper and everything needs paint. I think I would start with the laundry room cabinets. Your kitchen reveal gives me hope that my kitchen can look modern too.
KimberlyJ says
I love the transformation!
Kelly Methey says
Wow! What an amazing transformation!
Kelly Methey says
If I win the sprayer I would love to paint my bedroom!!
Kathy says
Beautiful! I so want to do something to my kitchen, but still saving. 🙂
Rachel says
This looks fantastic! Definitely some great inspiration for whenever we don’t have oak hardwood floors and can then get rid of the oak cabinets!
Sara says
I’m totally jealous – our kitchen looks like your original. (However, we did JUST move in, and had a baby two weeks ago. I keep reminding myself these things take time!) We have LOTS of updates to do in our place, and the sprayer would be SOOOO helpful! We’d probably use it on our laundry room remodel first – and then our kids bathroom. (So many projects!)
Tracie says
Oooh, a sprayer! What fun could be had…I’d start with the family room walls and move to the kitchen walls. Then tackle the bathroom cabinets…all three bathrooms. Saving for new kitchen cabinets, so won’t take the time to paint these old ones. Your kitchen is gorg.
Becah Degnan says
I live in a manufactured home and our cabinets aren’t even a nice sturdy oak, they are particle board basically covered with a paper printed to look like oak 🙁 So the first project I would work on would be my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. My parents just bought the house next door so I supposed my next project would be to help my mom refinish her cabinets 😉
Annette says
Way to go Anna! So proud of your hard work and vision to transfrom your space, it’s gorgeous:)
Kiera Chambers says
Oh, I would paint my kitchen table and chairs!
Lorie Underewood says
If I get this sprayer…. my first job will be attacking my own kitchen cabinets. Then the bathroom cabinets, then the doors, then the…. who knows what might happen!
Vicky Sjolander says
Amazing!!! You’re such an inspiration!!!!
Kimberly says
The first thing I would use a sprayer for is also my kitchen cabinets! Yours turned out beautiful!!
Crystal says
No idea what I would use it for first. So many projects around here.
Heidi says
We need to paint our kitchen cabinets white too. The sprayer would be great! Your kitchen looks beautiful!

Cheryl says
What a difference!!! I can’t believe just painting cabinets and adding new hardware and a few other changes would make such a huge difference!! Unbelievably beautiful. You did such a great job, you should be so proud of yourself. Enjoy your new kitchen!!!
Anna says
Thank you so much Cheryl! I really am so proud, it was a lot of work but I kept telling myself it would be worth it, and is IS! 🙂
Pam M says
We will tackle the kitchen cabinets first. The were oak like yours then the previous owner tried to white wash them. Tried being the operative word. The next project is painting the house.
Cindy Bechinski says
I would re-do my daughters kitchen!!
Sue {munchkin munchies} says
Probably my kitchen cabinets. I am so ready for a fresh new color!
Karin Meenan says
We just purchased a new home and we need to paint our kitchen and bathroom vanities. This would be a lifesaver!
Lisa G says
The cabinet in the downstairs boys’ bathroom. The lovely (and by “lovely” I mean hideous) oak cabinet has seen one too many water fights in there. I finally talked my hubby into letting me paint it black.
Joann Cross says
Love the kitchen. I’m inspired.
Diana Hall says
What a great job. I would finally actually get started on some projects.
Kim says
I love what you did with your kitchen. In the next couple of years we will be moving to PA to be closer to our daughter’s family and if we find a place with a good kitchen layout & I don’t like the cabinets I will probably consider painting them.
Amy Kaminski says
I love what you did here. I would love to win that sprayer and tackle the same thing in my kitchen.
Shirley says
I would spray some old files and other things to fit in my new craftroom. I want to redue my kitchen cabinets too. I would love to have this sprayer but I can’t afford one of these on a retirement check. thanks for sharing.
Paige Gonzalez says
We are re,ode long our kitchen too! The island is done. We put in all new countertops, granite, and need to paint the existing cabinets. We have the floor out and are waiting until the cabinets are painted to install the new porcelain tile. Hugh job but worth it…. 🙂
Paige Gonzalez says
Remodeling! Jeez, I don’t know what happened with spell check…..
Anna says
Haha, I was wondering. 🙂
BETTY BUTLER says
Wow. I am so inspired. Been in this house since 4th grade. Left for four years (job, college, marriage, 2 babies) Been fixin and repairing, redoing for 43 years. Had 9 kiddos. Finally empty nesters as of April Fool’s Day, 2007. Have 15 rooms of stuff from Gparents/parents/kids. I’m going to pitch a fix it fit. Then do kitchen rehab first. You’ve shown me us girls can do this. I come from a long line of real Rosey the Rivetors. Just gotta get my tools out, sharpen the saw, and bar the door. Oh yeah rent a dumpster and put Lowe’s on speed dial.
Anna says
You can do it girl! Lowes and I, we’re BFFs. 🙂
Aubrey says
I love love love it!!! You’re inspiring me 🙂
kara says
We’re getting ready to build a new house and are making the bathroom vanities ourselves, so this would come in handy for those! We’re also hoping to do some of the work ourselves to save money. Paining doors, trim, etc would be a lot easier with this! Your kitchen looks amazing!
Debbie says
I am in love with your kitchen! It looks amazing!!!
Debbie
Anna says
Ah, thank you Debbie!
Patsy Albrecht says
I’d love to win the sprayer! We are renovating a home in the mountains and there is sooooo much painting I need to do!!
Alissa Bell says
What a amazing transformation. I would use the sprayer for my living room first!
Heather Haugen says
Our kitchen cabinets need redone AND I promised my 4 year old daughter I would repaint her bedroom soon. This sprayer would be a huge help!
Constance Person says
I have repainted my kitchen cabinets twice, using rollers. A paint sprayer would mean I can change colors again!
Kati R. says
In the beginning of the post I thought… why does she want to change this kitchen when the cabinets only need to be painted? But then seeing the results it was totally worth it! You have a rocking kitchen! Hope you will have the money soon for the counter tops so your renovation can be complete. Job well done!
Anna says
Thank you so much Kati!
Leah Hudson says
Anna, This looks AMAZING! I know it is not finished, but I LOVE where you are going! And I love that you saved yourself time by adding new cabinet doors instead of repainting them. We recently started dreaming about doing a little bit more extensive update of our kitchen, but it is a LONG way off and we are still in the middle of remodeling two rooms.
Gayle says
I’ve been looking at sprayers as I’d love to tackle my kitchen as you have! Yours is a fabulous makeover — it’s looks amazing!! I can see myself spraying almost everything in sight starting with my kitchen, then the bathroom vanities and onto some old furniture. Thanks for the inspiration and all your photos.
Samantha says
Your kitchen came out beautiful. I love the black and white contrast. I recently redid my kitchen but I painted it all by hand and boy was that a job, this would have cut at least 2 days out of my painting. I really need to redo my doors in the house, they are peeling and have scribbles from the kids so I’d tackle that first.
Anna says
Last time we painted a kitchen we did it all by hand too. Using the sprayer makes it WAY faster! 🙂
Tristen says
Looks beautiful as always, Anna! I am looking to refinish an antique buffet that I would love to use that paint sprayer on! 🙂
Jennifer says
Thanks for the opportunity! Gosh, what wouldn’t I use this for? We just moved and I have a list as long as my arm of projects I would like to paint!
Terri says
Were did you get your stools?
Anna says
They are from IKEA.
CHRISTINA says
I have too many projects to name where the sprayer would come in handy. Love what you are doing in the kitchen.
Emily Faulknor says
This looks fabulous! All that work was SO worth it! So glad you have the kitchen you dreamed of! I love those three white canisters in the corner by the fridge. Where did you find them?
Anna says
Thank you Emily. Those canisters are from Zulily. I’ll let you know if I see them on there again. 🙂
Keeley says
The kitchen would be my first choice! We were just at Lowe’s last weekend to look at counter tops, cupboards/cabinets, sinks, faucets, and hardware. We are planning on doing it all ourselves but we don’t have the money right now to do it all at once. We are trying to decide where to start.
Debbie says
Congrats, Anna! Your kitchen looks great! Makes me more than ever want to be able to do something with my kitchen.
shelley ramsey says
Would love a paint sprayer, have soooooo many projects to do. Where would I start?!? I have some bookshelves that need a color change, and then a bathroom that needs to be painted, and two bedrooms, and the exterior of the house. That would be great for starters!
Denise says
I have some wood pieces that need to be painted, this sprayer would make the job go so much faster.
Emily, Our house now a home says
I painted my kitchen cabinets, best thing I ever did! I love the darker island. Really nice addition.

What an amazing transformation.
Mary says
I really love what you have done with your kitchen. I am very interested in the sprayer. I’m going to paint my kitchen cabinets soon. So were did you find the sprayer and the brand of paint you used?
Thanks, Mary
mreynolds says
Hey Mary,
This is Monique, Anna’s assistant. There is a product list at the end of this post and you should be able to click on each item and it should link you to where you can purchase that item. Let us know if you are not able to do this and we can email you the links!
Linda D. says
I think you did an AMAZING job with the finish of the cabinets. I just love your choice to go with a black island. I’m curious if you miss any of the storage by switching to open shelving? The open shelves, while more visually appealing than a bulky cabinet, always seem to hold fewer dishes and I worry that I won’t have enough upper level storage for dishes, glasses and serving plates. How is that working for you?
Great job! I look forward to your progress.
Judy E says
We are purchasing a house, and it has tons of kitchen cabinets that need painting! We sure could use this sprayer, it would make our life so much easier. Thanks!
Vicki says
i noticed in your kitchen remodel (which looks great) that you do not have an oven? do you have double ovens tucked away somewhere or just no oven at all?
mreynolds says
Hey Vicki,
This is Monique, Anna’s assistant. Anna does have an oven and you are right it is a double oven tucked away across from the refrigerator. You can get an idea of where it is located in this post: https://askannamoseley.com/2013/12/new-house-renovations-progress-update/. Hope this helps!
tegmapat says
If I were to win this sprayer, I would tackle my kitchen cabinets, too. I’m 73 yrs. old and altho’ I do all my own work still (DIY’s), it would make things much simpler if I had a sprayer. I love your kitchen, and there are so many things about it that I would like to play copy cat to, especially your built-in looking fridge! The whole kitchen is just beautiful! I’ve already put in a new glass and tile backsplash in mine, now I want to paint the kitchen cabinets. I would like to do the back of my island like yours, also. Thanks for all the great ideas!
Michello says
I would love to paint my kitchen cabinets!!
Kelly says
Your kitchen is similar to mine. I plan to redo my cabinets and my dream is carrara marble too! Thanks for the big reveal, it’s lovely.
Jenny says
So inspired to do this to my kitchen. Love it
Jill says
O.M.G…I absolutely ADORE your kitchen!! You may have given me the confidence to tackle my own…I’ve been putting it off forevvvvveeerrrr!! So I would LOVE to win this sprayer (I’ve actually pinned it to my “Things I NEED to buy” board on Pinterest! ;)) Thank you for the great opportunity, and enjoy your new kitchen!
Susan Simpson says
I have been studying and ready about painting my kitchen cabinets and I really want to get started
Angel Swindell says
Wow! It looks amazing.
Jessica says
I need to paint my cabinets…love what you did!
julie says
Was wondering if you have a microwave oven , and where it is. Also is oven between sink side of island and cooktop side? My kitchen is a very similar layout and I love what you have done. I want to change my , but need to know where other items are. A picture please? THanks!
mreynolds says
Hey Julie,
This is Monique, Anna’s Assistant. You can see where Anna moved her microwave oven and the double oven in this post: https://askannamoseley.com/2013/12/new-house-renovations-progress-update/. Hope this helps!
Julie says
You did a fantastic job and there is so much light in your kitchen now! The cupboards look like they were painted professionally.
I have put off painting my kitchen cupboards because painting them by hand will just take too much time to do by myself! I would use the Finish Max sprayer to first repaint my old, faded front door, then paint my kitchen cupboards and then finally paint my old, yellowed flat panel interior doors!
Lydia says
I would use it to finish our new bathroom – when we get it built!
Debi says
I’m planning on doing the dark oak cabinets in our new home. There are 32 doors to paint, plus bases and drawers! This would make my job so much easier!
Karen says
Love, love what you’ve done. In the planning stages for redoing our kitchen, and you’ve given me some great ideas. I’d use the sprayer to repaint my cabinets, as you have done. Thanks so much for the detailed painting tips!
Congratulations on a job well done! Enjoy!!!!
Ann says
Such a beautiful job. I have an oak kitchen, that when we built our house 5 years ago, I wanted white but my hubby vetoed that idea..now I keep working on him. Hopefully he’ll let me do this project this winter..I’m DEFINITELY going to show him your kitchen.
TammyS says
I would be thrilled to use this sprayer at my new-to-me lake house with outdated kitchen cabinets. There are many projects planned for this house, so I might also consider using it on a wood-paneled ceiling and the brick fireplace!
Cheree says
Thank you for all the detail! I desperately need to update my 35 year old kitchen!
cheree says
I need this kitchen!
Christina E. says
I bought a 1952 ranch about a year ago. It still has much of the original kitchen (some bottom cabinets were removed. It also has a tiny full bath with the original tub and tile. And the large breezeway has natural pine paneling that looks like it came out of my Grandfathers hunting camp in Maine. Needless to say, I have plenty of projects I need to complete to make my new old house feel like “home.” I’d love a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP to make everthing a little bit easier! Thanks for the inspiration Anna! I love the contrast of the black island and the white cabinets. Great job!
Shelley says
I love this. You gave great instructions.
Cindy Jones says
We’re planning on redoing our 1984 kitchen. Paint the golden oak cabinets just like “ask anna”, then new countertops, appliances and wall color.
Trish F says
I’ve been meaning to paint my old dark stained pine dining table and having the HomeRight sprayer may just be the tool I need to get it done. I love your kitchen makeover, it’s truly inspiring. Thanks for a great giveaway!
Trish F says
Hello, I love your kitchen makeover! Very inspiring. I have a dark stained pine dining table that I would love to paint and a HomeRight paint sprayer would help me do just that. Thanks for a great giveaway!
Lillace Christianson says
Wow, Anna! An unbelievable amount of work, but you have such a lovely space to live in now. Your color choices were great, and they coordinate very well with the countertops. I know you’re enjoying the new “feel” of the room!
Tanya from Dans le Lakehouse says
It’s perfect! Of course I love the open shelving, but I also love the wine rack above the fridge – that’s clever. The dark island is a beautiful contrast to the white cupboards. I just love how much more modern and open it looks!
Darci says
This looks gorgeous!! Almost perfect! How did you like the look of the parts that you used the wood filler? Was it as smooth as the cabinets you painted without the oak grain? I’m looking at filling my cabinet doors as well but want to know how good of a job it does.
Anna says
Thank you Darci! For the most part where I used the filler the cabinets look great. It’s a tricky product and there are a few spots that I didn’t mix well enough so they didn’t turn out as nicely, but overall I’d say it looks great. I didn’t do our doors though, I bought new doors, so doing the doors might be an incredibly tedious process.
melissa says
Hello,
I am so happy that I stumbled upon your blog! I am eager to start with my kitchen redo and want to get rid of the oak grain, and it looks like you had success with your process! It looks amazing! Could you tell me what you used on your kitchen floors, as they are beautiful, as well. I am eager to continue following your blog and love the fact that we share the faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ!
Bethany Davis says
Hi, Melissa! This is Anna’s assistant, Bethany. Thank you for the nice comments on the blog–we are happy you’re here! The flooring Anna used is Morning Star weathered chestnut strand bamboo from Lumber Liquidators. You can read more about it, along with the process for installing it, on Anna’s post here: https://askannamoseley.com/2014/01/diy-hardwood-floor-installation/ Hope this helps! 🙂
Heather says
Hi Anna. Can you give me a ballpark on the price to replace the cabinet doors??
Currently about to paint my cabinets but would love the look of new doors- but not sure I can afford.
Thank you.
Anna says
It has been a few years but I think replacing our cabinet doors cost us just under $1,000. My contractor ordered them for us.
