How to Clean a French Press {video tutorial}

How to clean a French Press- Ask Anna

My husband is an avid coffee drinker, and he loves rich, dark coffee, which is why he uses a French Press to make coffee in the mornings. If you want to get the maximum flavor from your coffee a French Press is the way to make it because all the delicious oils get brewed with the grounds, rather than absorbing into a filter. Anyways I won’t give you a whole lesson on how to make good coffee (I worked at a coffee shop while I was in college), I’m just here to show you how to clean a French Press :).  They can be a little tricky to clean because the coffee grounds tend to get stuck in the metal grate at the bottom of the press.

How to clean a French Press- Ask Anna

So today I’m sharing a quick video tutorial to show you a quick and easy way to clean a French Press!

I know a lot of people don’t use a French Press because they think it’s difficult to clean, but now you know how easy it is! Are you a coffee drinker? How do you brew yours?

I love my french press for those exact reasons! 🙂 It amazes me how much oil collects inside the glass carafe. I’d love to watch your video on cleaning it to see if I can be doing it any different, I keep getting poked by a stray wire on the mesh. :/ But the video says its for private use. Can that be changed or am I out of the loop?

How often do you clean yours?

And I have that same platter on the wall behind you…the one with the lady drinking Coke. 🙂

I clean it after every use otherwise it’s a little harder to clean.
I love that Coke platter, it was my grandma’s. 🙂

Thanks for this, Anna! I love the French press, but cleaning it has always created problems for me!

I tried to send you an email earlier today but my message was returned as undeliverable. Has your email address changed? (I sent it to askannamosely@hotmail.com.) Thanks so much!

What soap are you using? Being a picky coffee drinker, that the soap I use can change the taste of the coffee (especially if you have a cheaper press with plastic pieces).

I use an all-natural, unscented, dye-free soap so it doesn’t change the flavor at all. I bought mine at Costco but I’m sure you can find them anywhere. 🙂

    Hi Anna,
    Thanks for this!
Question, won’t just dumping the grinds down the sink clog the drain?

We never had a problem at our old house but in our new house it is a problem so we just dump them in the trash or over the deck into the bushes. 🙂

Anna, I just bought my first French Press today from the Salvation Army thrift store! I found your post as I was looking for directions on how to clean it. It actually looks very clean and like it wasn’t used much.

My French Press looks like the same one you have and it doesn’t have a brand name label on it anywhere I’ve looked. Can you tell me the brand of the FP you are cleaning?

      Hey Tracy,
This is Monique, Anna’s Assistant. Unfortunately, Anna doesn’t have the french press mentioned in this post anymore. However she does think that she has the same brand as her previous one. The brand is Bodum and you can get it from Target. Hope this is helpful!
