Hi, everyone! It’s Lauren from Mom Home Guide, and I am here to share one of my recent outdoor decorating projects! With the summer entertaining season approaching, I decided to brighten up my patio’s décor! The old plastic Adirondack chairs on my patio were faded and had seen better days, so I decided to freshen them up with a spray paint makeover! This quick tutorial will show you how to update old patio chairs and add a bit of summer to the patio!
How to Spray Paint Plastic Furniture
Step #1 – Pick Your Paint
Start by picking your spray paint. I want the new color on my plastic chairs to last, so I picked out a spray paint that’s made to bond to plastic. My choice was Rust-Oleum American Accents in Satin Lagoon. I want to give my patio a modern look, so a bright, fun color is what it needs! You will need 1 can of spray paint for each Adirondack chair.
Step #2 – Clean the Chairs
I put my Adirondack plastic chairs on the lawn and gave them a good scrub with soap and water. (Since I was working on the lawn, I didn’t have to prep my space or worry about cleaning up after my project!)
Make sure you allow the chairs to completely dry. If you scrubbed your plastic furniture outdoors, just leave them in the sun for an hour or two to dry!
Step #3 – Apply an Even Coat of Spray Paint
Lightly spray on your paint to prevent drips. Keep your spray paint can 6 inches away from the chair when spraying. If you spray paint outside, you are less likely to inhale paint. (I also wore an inexpensive particulate mask for more protection). If there is a light wind, position yourself so the paint and wind is moving away from you. Make sure you check the chairs from all angels to make sure everything is properly covered in paint. You might even have to get on your hands and knees to do this!
Step #4 – Allow the Chairs to Dry
I had some errands to run after I painted, so I left the chairs out in the sun to dry for an hour or two. When I returned, the chairs were dry! But to be sure, I waited a few days until I allowed anyone to sit in them!
This plastic chair makeover was cheap, fun and easy, and it did a lot to add a boost of happy color to my patio! Have you ever spray painted plastic? You’ll be surprised at how well it turns out! What will you paint first?

My friend refurbishes with chalk paint because it requires no sanding. I like your chairs. The blue is very pretty.

I painted mine almost this same color a few years ago, but they are faded now and need to be done again. I’ll be on the lookout for that paint. (And I’ll be sure to check from all ‘angels’! hehe)
