Spring and Summer Birdhouse Wreath Tutorial

Hey guys! I am Bev and I blog at Round and Round DIY Wreath Ideas, where I craft and share unique DIY wreath tutorials. I am thrilled to be here today to share a seasonal spring craft project ‚ a summer birdhouse wreath tutorial.

The spring season brings two of my favorite things: bursts of colorful flower blooms and chirping birds. In this short tutorial, I will show you how to use these timeless accents to make a DIY burlap mesh wreath for your door that will wow the neighbors!

Here’s what you need:

Roll of burlap mesh
Work wreath
Roll of 1 1/2″ ribbon
Floral bird accents
Silk sunflower stems
Wooden birdhouse (light weight)

Step #1

The first step is to add the roll of mesh burlap to the wreath work frame. Gather the end of the mesh and place it inside the sprigs on the work wreath. Twist the sprigs tightly to secure mesh to wreath. I recommend starting on the inside ring of the work wreath which will make it easier to manage the mesh as you work around the wreath.

Step #2

Next, move down the mesh approximately 10″ and gather again. Secure this gather with the sprigs and repeat this process all the way around the inside ring. Once you have completed the inside ring, move to the outer ring and repeat the process all the way around.

Step #3
Now we will layer the ribbon over the mesh. Using the same sprigs, weave the ribbon around the wreath, moving randomly from the inside ring to the outside ring. I circled the wreath 2 times crossing over the ribbon as I continued adding it. I love the color contrast of the lime green ribbon as it adds a bright POP to the wreath design. Feel free to sub your favorite color of ribbon in!

Step #4

To add the silk sunflowers, snip the ends leaving only enough to be nestled down into the mesh. A dab of hot glue will hold it in place. The stems I chose had two flowers attached. I snipped just below where they connected.

Step #5
Our next step is to add the birdhouse. Make sure to apply a generous amount of hot glue to the back of the birdhouse in order to attach it. It is important to purchase a lightweight birdhouse. If your birdhouse is too heavy, additional support using floral wire may be necessary.

Step #6

Finally we need to add the birds. I used the wire that was already on the bird, and wrapped it around the sprigs on the work wreath for a simple solution. You can add a dab of hot glue as well to attach the birds.

Step #7

Our last step is to craft a bow from the ribbon. Fold the mesh ribbon into a uniform bow and attach it to the upper left corner of the wreath.
