I know it’s Christmas time and I’m supposed to be writing about all things Christmas but I wanted to give you a little update on a project we’re working on. Our master bathroom is U-G-L-Y, it’s straight out of the early 90’s and it is bad. Eventually we plan on doing an entire bathroom remodel but there’s one room that we’ll keep, even when we do that, and that’s the toilet room. My husband and I both love having a little toilet room so we can shut the door and have some privacy, even if the other person is in the bathroom. The only problem with our toilet room, is that it’s boring (at least it’s not ugly, right?).
See what I mean? Super b-o-r-i-n-g. So I’ve been looking around on Pinterest to get some ideas for how we can make this room a little more appealing, I mean, I know it’s just a toilet room but it should get to look pretty too, right? And that’s when I found this picture.
Isn’t it gorgeous? I knew this was the idea I wanted to use for our bathroom so I talked my husband into doing the project while I decorated for Christmas, and he headed out to Lowes. (He’s such a good husband)
The first thing he did was rip out the baseboards behind the toilet so that he could get the shelves flush with the wall. Then he installed tall wood pieces on each side of the room, to give the shelves a built-in look.
Next he built the false wall behind the toilet to give the built-ins some depth. He added a little ledge on top so I can add some decorations like in the inspiration picture.
Our ledge is a little smaller, but it will do the trick. 🙂
After the bottom half of the wall was finished it was time to install the upper shelves. We used our new Bosch GLM 15 to laser measure the width of the room so we knew how long to cut the shelves. It was way easier, and more accurate than using a traditional measuring tape.
After the shelves were cut we used the Bosch GLM 15 to measure the distance between the shelves. It was SO much easier than getting a measurement the way we normally do! Using the GLM 15 saved us a lot of time.
It was pretty awesome because we could set it on the shelf which freed up our hands to move the next shelf up or down depending on the measurement.
This is as far as we’ve gotten with the project and honestly it probably won’t be done until after Christmas because I’m the painting expert in our house and I don’t have the time to paint it right now. However I am excited about the progress and I can already tell that it’s going to look awesome when it’s done!
What do you think of the project/progress? Oh and I’d like to just throw this out there that my husband LOVED the Bosch GLM 15 and I think it would make a great stocking stuffer, if you are still looking for ideas {hint hint}. Who’s stocking would you put it in, yours or your hubby’s? To find a retailer near you click on the “Buy Now” button on the Bosch website.

Hi. Love the decorative and functional idea of the built-in shelves and the life they’ll add to the room. I was wondering how you get the shelves to stay, if you used a nail gun and shot them at an angle, or glue? Thanks!

We used little “L” brackets and screwed them in. 🙂

What a great idea for a water closet. (aka Toliet Room). YES! It should be pretty. Great job.

I have been gawking, oohing and aahing over that picture on pinterest for quite some time now. Even collecting similar items to display on the shelves. Thanks for this post, maybe now I can kick it into high gear and get them built!
