Cold and flu season is upon us, once again. Don’t you wish that we could just skip it once in awhile? With our kids in school their classrooms are like big petri dishes and then they bring all those lovely germs home with them at the end of the day. While you can’t control what other families do in their homes you can definitely do your best to help keep the germs out of your house! The last 3 years that Malea has been in school we’ve done a pretty good job of keeping the germs out of our house which means we’ve all gotten to stay healthy (yay!). So today I’m sharing my 5 super simple ways to prepare for cold and flu season, to help keep your family and your home clean and healthy.
#1 Wash those dirty hands
We have a routine in our house when the girls get home from school, the first thing we all do is go wash our hands. Whatever germs were on their hands from school, are now mostly down the drain, and not on anything in our house. I know this is such a simple thing but it has been one of the biggest things that has helped keep us healthy.
#2 Disinfect door handles
One of Malea’s chores each week is to disinfect the door handles around the house. If you think about it, door handles and light switches are some of the most touched things in your house, so it’s guaranteed there are germs lingering there.
So whether you use a cloth or a store bought disinfectant wipe, it’s important to sanitize both, door handles and light switches, each week.
#3 Take your vitamins
I can be terrible about remembering to take my vitamins but once summer is over I give them to the girls, and take mine every day. Having a healthy immune system is another thing that will help keep your family sick-free! Exercise is also an important key to helping keep healthy so get out with the kids and go jump in some rain puddles with them. 🙂
#4 Wash wash wash
I honestly hate washing our bedding but during cold and flu season I’m more consistent about it then I am the rest of the year. To help keep you and your kids healthy don’t stop at just the sheets, make sure you wash their pillow cases, their pillows (see how to do that here), their stuffed animals, blankets, etc. Our kids spend a lot of time in their beds, snuggling with their lovies so it’s important to make sure they stay clean and healthy too. (We don’t want any Velveteen Rabbits getting tossed out) 🙁
#5 Breath clean air
The last way to help create healthier home is to breathe clean air. We use the Filtrete Healthy Living Ultimate Allergen Reduction Filter (MPR 1900) to help keep our air cleaner because it attracts and captures airborne particles that can carry bacteria and viruses. Changing your filter at least every three months is a simple way to help keep a fresher, cleaner and healthier home.
These 5 tips have helped keep our family healthy for the last couple of years and I hope they will do the same for you and your family. A healthier home doesn’t have to be something that’s hard to do, it just takes consistency. But get your kids involved and make it fun for everyone.

Thanks for the tips. I forgot about the filter. I change my clothes when I get home from work. I work at a school with many different children. Don’t want to spread those germs in my home.

That’s a good one Amy! 🙂
