I had a reader tell me that they wanted another way to eliminate odors, rather than just always using “plain baking soda”. Baking soda is definitely the easy answer for getting rid of odors but I totally get that it can be kind of boring. However if you use baking soda to make homemade air freshener then all of the sudden it’s much more exciting, and it smells delicious!
Here’s what you will need to make it:
- Empty spray bottle
- Water
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil
Step 1
Pour baking soda into a small dish and add the drops of essential oil to it. Mix well. This is an important step because the oil and water will not mix so you must mix the baking soda and oil together first.

Now you have delicious smelling, and cheap, homemade air freshener that you can use to freshen up everything in your house: furniture, laundry room, closets, dog bed, the options are endless!
What’s even better about this homemade air freshener is that, because it’s so cheap to make, you can switch out the scents for each season! Mix and match your favorite essential oils to freshen up your home in every season! This month, since it’s fall, I’m using cinnamon, vanilla and cloves, mmmm! What scents will you start with?

Dear Anna! Your recipe sounds nice (and very natural), but what happens, if I use a solution like this often on fabric or carpet? Could it be, that the soda finally cristallizes again and you get a white layer of soda on all the surfaces? 🙂

If you use it on the carpet or couches I’d just vacuum up the dried baking soda. 🙂

Hello, Cyril! Thank you for the inquiry. I’m Anna’s Assistant, Bethany. I’m really sorry, but at this time this not something Anna has any experience with. You may want to try and Google to see if there are any DIY solutions that are carnuba-free. Best of luck!
