Today I have a quick and easy tip for you! I love having rugs in my home but I hate it when they slip and slide all over the floor, it makes me crazy having to constantly adjust them all the time! So today’s quick tip is how to keep rugs from slipping. It’s actually a really easy solution and you’re going to wish you’d thought of it years ago, or at least I did when I discovered it!
Here’s what you need:
- Command Picture Hanging Strips (Edit – I recently found these, which are even better because they’re made for rugs!)
Take two of the strips and velcro them together. Make sure to keep the paper on the back of both of the strips.
Next remove one of the papers on the back and stick it to the corner of your rug.
Then remove the second paper and press the Command strips and rug down to the floor. Press on it with your fingers, or your feet, to make sure it’s in place.
Repeat with the remaining 3 corners and your rug will be slip-free! If you need to pull the rug up to clean underneath, no problem! (Haha, I know that kind of sounds like a cheesy sales pitch but it’s not, I’m just really excited about how amazing this tip is!) Just peel the corner up and the floor velcro will stay in place on the floor while you pick up the rug and clean.
I have the Command Picture Hanging Strips on the corners of all my rugs, from the indoor/outdoor rugs (above), to the flimsy rug in the kitchen that sees a lot of traffic and even my big fluffy rug in the living room!
Did you know this trick already? (If you did why didn’t you tell me!?) 🙂 It’s silly how excited this makes me but I can’t tell you how much of a patience saver it is not having to fix the rugs all the time!

What a great tip! Does it work on a rug over a carpet without pulling threads from the w/wall carpeting?
I’m not sure, I’ve never tried it on a rug over carpet. I think it’s worth a try though! 🙂
Awesome tip. Actually, 3M makes a command strip version specifically for rugs. I’ve found them at Lowes before.
Just a quick “tip” on the command hooks that you used. I used one of my Stampin Up unused stamp blocks and put one of those pieces on it and for easy removal of the “other half” that is on the wall/floor, you press the wood block with the match to is and it comes off easily! Learned from lots of those that it isn’t easy to remove without the alternate piece there — not like the regular hooks are — but this works great! I made one from a scrap of a furring strip for my daughter. 🙂
This tip was a lifesaver for me tonight! I just realized that the new rugs I bought for the hall were not rubber-backed. I could picture my Easter guests sliding across the floor. I had exactly eight sets of picture hangers in my junk drawer, and now they’re holding my rugs down! Thanks!

Does the command strip stay securely stuck on the rug backing? I’ve been looking for rugs with rubber backing because I have dogs that run to the window everytime they see or hear someone and my runners/rugs are constantly messed up. If this will really stick onto the back of a rug securely, my buying options would be so much better!!
Hi, Sherri! I’m Anna’s assistant, Bethany. Anna said the Command strips do stick very well to the rug backing. Anna uses them on almost all of her rugs and has had great luck with them. Hope this helps!

Nope, I haven’t had any issues. I replace mine about once a year and I’ve never had trouble getting them off the floor. 🙂 I use them on my tile floor in the bathroom too!
Omg! Wow I just did something very similar with my small rug at the front door. Except I got small rounded velcro pieces and it seems to be working pretty well so far! but I havent put them on the rest of my rugs yet because im afraid they will turn my floors or leave a spot on them if i ever decide to remove the velcro pieces. Have you tried the command strips on real hardwood floors? If so, have you ever removed one to see if it left a mark?

Yep, I had them under all the rugs at our last house (which was real hardwood bamboo) and when we moved I pulled them all up and the floors were great. On a couple of them there was a little sticky residue left but I just peeled it up with my finger and it was all good. 🙂
Any tips for an area rug on top of a rug? I just got a cute area rug for my kids room, which is carpeted. It’s completely loose and I’m afraid they’re going to trip over it.
I haven’t tried this but you could try using one of the non-slip mats you can buy from Amazon.
Would this work on braided rug to and rugs that have lost their backing?
It’s definitely worth trying! I think it would still work, you might just have to replace the 3M strip more often.
