When we redecorated our bathroom I really wanted to update the towel rack from the cheap, old, outdated towel rack, to something fun and more our style. I really like old shutters and I thought it would be fun to take a shutter and turn it into a DIY towel rack. My sister found this great shutter for me at a thrift store, and the best part was the price.
Score! It turned out to be a plastic shutter but I thought it looked cool, and I think plastic is better for a steamy bathroom anyways. The first thing I did was clean the shutter with the EnviroCloth to clean off years of dirt, grime and cobwebs.
Next I added hooks to the back so that we could hang it on the wall.
After adding the hooks I went to World Market and picked up some cute knobs. I got 4 different styles because I didn’t want them to be too matchy-matchy, I just wanted them to coordinate with all the colors in the bathroom.
When I got home with the knobs I measured out where I wanted the knobs and then used the drill to put holes in the shutter. This is the point at which I thought, “gee, I should really be taking pictures of this project” but I had already drilled the holes and put the knobs in and I didn’t want to take them out again, just for a picture. So you get the point, drill the holes then screw the knobs into the holes. 🙂
Here’s what it looked like after I’d put the knobs in (when I finally got up and got my camera).
The hooks stuck out a little in the back but it worked out perfectly for keeping the shutter a little off the wall, that way the wet towels have room to “breathe”.
Next I took it in the bathroom and hung it up over the existing towel rack. A much better improvement, don’t you think?
I removed the old towel rack and patched the holes and this is what it looks like now.
I think it’s cute and fun and I love the way it turned out. I also love that now I can hang up to 4 towels because we go through a lot of towels in the summer between baths, the swimming pool, the lake etc!
What do you think of our new shutter towel rack?
