DIY Potpourri Sachets

DIY pot pourri sachets

Hi, everyone! It’s Lauren from Mom Home Guide, and I am here to share my latest decorating craft! Now that spring is here, I have been doing what I can to freshen up my home! I have been spring cleaning and adding spring colors to my home decor! I added both color and a fresh scent to my home recently with homemade DIY potpourri sachets.

These cute and colorful homemade potpourri sachets can be hand-stitched in minutes, and they make great teacher appreciation gifts or DIY favors for bridal or baby showers!

Materials

  • Felt in a variety of colors
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Hand Needle
  • Buttons
  • Pinking Shears
  • Potpourri (you can get a bag of potpourri for $1 at a dollar store)
  • A pencil
  • Pins

Instructions

Step 1

Make a template for your homemade DIY potpourri sachets by cutting a heart out of paper. (An easy way to do this is to fold a piece of paper in half and draw half a heart along the fold — that way your heart will be perfectly symmetrical!)

Fold your felt in half and pin your heart template to the top side of your folded felt. Trace the outline of your paper heart with a pencil.

Step 2

When you lift up your heart, you should see a nice outline of the heart shape on your felt. Knot a piece of embroidery thread and stitch on a button of your choice. (You can do so by knotting a short piece of embroidery thread and pushing your needle up through the inside of the top piece of felt, so that your knot will be on the inside of your sachet.) When your button is on securely, pull the needle through to the inside of your sachet, and knot your thread.

Step 3

Knot another piece of embroidery thread — you will need a strand that’s long enough to stitch the outline of your heart. Start out by pulling your needle up from the inside of your heart, so the knot will end up on the inside of your completed heart. Stitch around the outline of your heart, leaving about a 1.5 inch opening so you can stuff your heart with potpourri.

Step 4

Stuff your heart sachet with potpourri. Once the sachet is stuffed to your liking, stitch up the rest of your sachet, bringing your needle to the inside of the sachet – make a knot so your stitches will stay in place. (I do this by pulling my needle through an existing stitch, and forming a loop to make a knot.)

Step 5

Use your pinking shears to cut around the outline of your heart. Your stuffed DIY potpourri sachet is now complete! These sachets are nice to set out in a pretty bowl, or you can stuff them in drawers to add a pretty scent to your clothes!
