Last October my mother-in-law took my sister-in-law and I to Villa La Estancia, a resort in Mexico, to celebrate her 60th birthday. It was an incredible place and from the moment you walked in the front doors you felt like royalty. People were there greeting you, saying “welcome home”, everyone was so friendly and best of all the place smelled AMAZING!
My MIL (mother-in-law) was obsessed with how incredible it smelled in the lobby and every time we walked through there she would say, “It smells so amazing in here!” I was determined to figure out how they made it smell so amazing because I thought if I could figure it out, then it would be a great Christmas gift for her (and it was!). So when we got home I emailed the resort and asked them how they did it.
They promptly emailed me back and said the scent was an “in-house blend of lavender and mint that their staff constantly sprayed around the lobby.” Well I knew giving my MIL a spray bottle and some essential oils for Christmas wouldn’t be the best idea, so I purchased an essential oil diffuser on Amazon and got to work blending oils.
To make your house smell like a spa, or in this case a fancy hotel in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico, here’s what you’ll need –
Here’s what to do –
- Add the oils to the diffuser
- Add water to the fill line in the diffuser
- Turn it on and let the diffuser do it’s work.
It’s as easy as 1-2-3, and in just a few minutes your house will smell incredible! What’s even better is that your house won’t just smell amazing but the oils in the diffuser also add benefits to the air! Use any combination of oils you like but here are the benefits of the two I used.
- Lavender – Calming, relieves anxiety and soothes emotions
- Peppermint – Increases alertness, calms stress and tension
I’m sure we could all use a little less stress in our homes. 🙂 Now I think I’ll sit back and relax and dream about the beaches of Mexico…

What a great idea! How much of each oil do you use? And do you use equal amounts? I’m sure I could customize, but I’d like to try starting off with the same “recipe” you used and loved. Thanks so much for sharing!

You can really use how ever much/little you’d like but I did about 3/4 drops of each. 🙂

Thanks so much for the quick answer! Can’t wait to try this out at my house.

Hi Anna. I just moved into a new house. I have a small patio about 10×11 I want to make it a Tuscan theme. Off set 10 ft linen colored umbrella, two resin wicker barrel chairs with flowered cushion from Pier 1. So far that’s it. Any suggestion would be so appreciated.

Hi, Debbie! I’m Anna’s Assistant, Bethany! Your Tuscan-themed patio sounds lovely! Anna usually goes to Pinterest for ideas and inspiration and creates a Design Board from what she likes there. Here is a helpful post she wrote on how to create a design board: https://askannamoseley.com/2012/09/how-to-create-a-design-board/. As you go through Pinterest and gather ideas, be sure to note what colors, patterns, plants, and other themes that pop out at you, and take those common themes and create a design board from that. I hope this helps, and best of luck on the patio!

Many thanks for this good information, I did wonder what and how much too.
Anna says
I just do equal drops of each, maybe 5 each.

We just got back from Villa Estancia and every time we entered the lobby, I commented on it. I will try this because I miss that fabulous smell!!
Anna says
That’s awesome!!! It really does smell similar and it takes me back to vacation when I need to escape from my day. 🙂

I started researching this because I am still thinking about how the lobby smelled from my Mexico vacation 5 years ago! My big question is… I have an open concert house, is one diffuser really going to make at least the living/kitchen/dining side of my house have a distinct smell or does it sort of get washed away in all the space?
Anna says
For a large space I’d recommend a large diffuser on each side of the house. That way it doesn’t matter where you walk, you’ll still get a hint of the scent. 🙂
