When we moved from our other house I was stressed about what I was going to do with all of Malea’s clothes and toys since we weren’t going to have her beautiful closet from EasyClosets anymore (insert me with a BIG sad face). Her closet at the new house is much smaller than her old closet so I knew her toys wouldn’t all fit the way they used to. On the flip side, our master bedroom closet is much larger than our old one, including a set of dresser drawers that my husband is using for his things. What I decided to do was a little switch-a-roo of the dressers. I decided giving Malea our large IKEA dresser would be a great way to organize her clothes and toys, and me taking her smaller dresser would be fine since Matt has the built-ins in the closet.
Here is how I organized all of my things in the smaller dresser. In the top drawer I have all the small things organized neatly with IKEA SKUBB boxes. My underwear, bras, socks, leggings, slips and belts all fit in the drawer since everything is divided into their own boxes.
In the second drawer I store my shorts and my tank tops. The teal box on the right is a Tiffany gift box that I repurposed after receiving a gift from a friend in it. I love the pretty pop of color it adds to my drawer!
In the third drawer I have all my PJ’s folded and my sleeping tank tops organized in the other Tiffany’s box. I even have a little extra space since these drawers are a little wider than what I had in our other dresser!
In Malea’s room I had to think about her toys, not just her clothes. I miss the baskets and drawers of her EasyClosets Closet but I was able organize them in our old dresser using the same IKEA SKUBB boxes.
In one of the bottom drawers I have her Mr. Potato Head set, her jewelry and the doll clothes in each of their own SKUBB boxes.
In the other bottom drawer I also used the SKUBB boxes to organize all her Barbies, Barbie clothes, “squishy dolls” and all their accessories. Having each of the things in their own box makes it very easy for her to clean up. It doesn’t always look this perfect but she does a very good job at putting the right things in the right boxes.
In one of the middle drawers I have all her dress up tutus, hats, crowns, etc. Her princess dresses are all hung up in her closet but this drawer is a good spot for all the things that don’t hang.
The other middle drawer is her “real” clothes. Her scarves, shorts and pants are all organized and in their own SKUBB boxes. Just like the toys, having the clothes in their own boxes makes them really easy for her to find and put away.
One of the top drawers in empty, which is nice because it means we have room to grow, but in the other drawer I have her tights, PJ’s, ballet leotards, swim suits, socks, underwear and bloomers. Because they are all organized in their own spaces she loves to go pick out her own PJ’s, underwear, etc!
So the moral of the story is that dresser organization is super easy when you have a bunch of SKUBB boxes. {wink} No, not really but using individual boxes for things makes organizing much easier. If you don’t have an IKEA near you, use gift boxes, cereal boxes laid on their side, or any other kind of box you can find. Having each thing in its own box makes your life easier because your kids will be able to get out, and put away, their own clothes, and it will also make it easier for you to find things in your dresser! It’s refreshing to open a nice organized drawer rather than a messy one where things get lost in the “black holes”.
Come back tomorrow because one of my new contributors is going to have more awesome tips for how to organize a kid’s room without a dresser! If you have any dresser organizing tips I would love to hear them! I love learning new, creative ways to organize from my readers!!

Great organization!! Love the SKUBB boxes. I haven’t used them yet, but I keep looking at them everytime I go to IKEA.

We love those IKEA boxes as well! They work great in the top drawer of a dresser for Todd to empty his pockets at the end of the day – wallet, loose coins, etc. all has a home & then he isn’t searching for things the following day.
