Hey, everyone! It’s Lauren from Mom Home Guide. I live in the Northeast, which means that we get beautiful fall weather! I love fall leaves, autumn hikes, apple and pumpkin picking and … fall decorating!
I was excited this past spring when my husband and I purchased a sofa for our living room! Now that our kids are tweens, we have finally converted our living room from an open play space to more of an adult room. When I first got the sofa, I made super easy placemat and napkin pillows for the new sofa. Most of the pillows are in pretty spring colors like yellow and green, so I thought it would be great to update their look for fall!
I wanted to add an autumn look to my living room sofa without having to spend the money or effort on making all new pillows or pillow covers. I came across the idea of wrapping pillows in ribbon for a new look and thought it was just genius! I headed out to my local craft store and bought some wired burlap ribbon in both a black and an orange chevron, and some non-wired burlap ribbon in a sage green. I also got Velcro dot fasteners so I could easily wrap my pillows with the burlap, and some wood buttons. It was all fairly inexpensive!
Supplies
- Burlap ribbon (the amount depends on the size and number of your pillows)
- Various buttons
- Pillows
- Scissors
I basically wrapped the burlap around each pillow like I was wrapping a gift. I eye-balled how much burlap ribbon I would need, making sure that the ribbon overlapped in the back so I could Velcro the two pieces of burlap ribbon together. I folded the rough edge of the burlap (where I had cut the ribbon off with a scissor) over to hide the raw edge before adding the Velcro.
My placemat pillows have a print front and a plain white back, so I decided to make the back of my placemat pillows the front for this project, so I wouldn’t have clashing prints.
The green burlap isn’t wired, so I tied a simple knot to add that ribbon to my other existing pillows. (I didn’t need the Velcro for that ribbon.)
I love how the burlap ribbon adds pattern and color to the sofa pillows. On some pillows I wrapped a ribbon both vertically and horizontally, while other pillows only have one length of ribbon encircling the pillow. I also hand stitched a button onto some of the burlap ribbon.
I love how my new burlap wrapped fall pillows look!
What’s even better is that if I decide to update these pillows to a Halloween or Christmas look, doing so will be super easy. I just have to find some Halloween and Christmas ribbon!
