Does your house look like this?
Well neither does mine. I don’t know about you but my living room, pantry and closet look nothing like that. Sure if we had tons of money and could build a house again I would definitely want to have these rooms but that is not reality. Reality is that when we had our daughter we moved out of the beautiful home, we built 5 years ago, and moved into a much smaller and much older home. 41 years older to be exact. With that you don’t have things that are brand new, everything is the way that someone else thought it should be 41 years ago (and that person and I do NOT see eye to eye). 🙂 Honestly my whole kitchen needs a makeover, along with the bathroom cabinets and counter tops.
All that to say that your space isn’t always going to look like it came out of a magazine but it’s your space and you need to make it your own. Be proud of the small, dark, old space that you call your pantry or your closet. 🙂 The owners of the homes in these pictures probably spent a fortune to organize the way that they did but the good news is that you don’t have to!
Get creative. Reuse things in your home and utilize the Dollar Store, Big Lots and the 99 Cent Store! All of the organizing and de-cluttering posts that I have posted so far have cost me barely anything. You can go to Target, the Container Store or one of those larger stores but you are going to find pretty much the same thing–at a much lower cost–at the Dollar Store. I’ve actually scoured Redding looking for great storage containers and so far my most favorites have been from the Dollar Store and the 99 Cent Store!!! Shopko did have some great stacking containers but they were more than I wanted to spend so I’ll have to watch for them to go on sale.
Keep in mind that things don’t always have to be used for what they were intended for. I found these great baskets at the 99 Cent Store but they are actually planters, they are lined with plastic.
I thought they were cute so I used them in my closet and in the entryway closet for storing things.
Reuse things. When I cleaned out the playroom closet I found this 3-drawer stacked container. I was going to put it in the garage sale pile but decided to reuse it to organize my tools.
Through all of my organizing and de-cluttering that I’ve been doing in the last few weeks I have found lots of things that I can reuse. I think you’ll be surprised at the things you find in your closets and cupboards. 🙂
So get creative and reuse things that you already have. Organizing can be expensive but it doesn’t have to be so don’t let lack of money hold you back from having the home of your dreams!
