Summer Reading Station {Guest Post}

Hi Ask Anna readers! We are Trish and Bonnie from the blog, Uncommon Designs. We are thrilled to be here today while sweet Anna is away.

Today we are going to share with you a simple way to create and organize your children’s summer reading.

Summer reading station

Both of my children have required reading each summer from their schools. Usually by mid July someone has “lost” a book.

Can you relate?

By creating this little Summer Reading Station in our kitchen. Everything will be organized and in one place.

A girl can hope {I even wrote that on our chalkboard plate}…fingers crossed!

This bookcase is in our kitchen area and like many of you, our kitchen is the hub of the home. By placing the reading station here, it is where everyone can see it and access it.

I made these simple little DIY Vintage Crates to store their books, supplies, and instructions in.

Supplies Needed to Make the DIY Vintage Crates
unfinished wood crate {these came from Jo-Ann}
stain in color of choice {I used dark walnut}
sponge tip brush
paper towels
self-adhesive book plates {these are from the Martha Stewart collection by Avery, available at Staples}
Handles for sides {these came from Lowes}
Jute Twine

First, apply the stain to the crates with the sponge tip brush. Wipe off excess with paper towels. Allow the crates to dry thoroughly!

Next, apply the self-adhesive bookplates to the dry crates. I used the silver bookplates and centered them on the crates…

Finally, attach the handles on the sides. I then made simple chalkboard labels and used a chalk pen to write my kiddos initials on the labels. No confusion as to who needs to do what.

I placed the books inside with the instructions for their projects tied to the side of the crate. I put a few other items into the crates as well, those writing prompts and journal ideas were a bonus.

I just love the way this came together! Believe it or not, my kids are actually excited to have all of this organized and personalized for them. We will see how long that excitement lasts. They even think the Burlap Covered Letter between their crates is the “coolest” .

So who’s ready for summer? Do you have summer reading? Do you participate in your local library’s summer reading program? I hope this little Summer Reading Station helps get you organized and your kids excited about reading!

And when back to school time comes around, be sure to check out my Portable Homework Station too!

A big “THANK YOU!” to Anna for having us stop by today! We hope that you will visit us over at Uncommon Designs!
