How to Hide a Litter Box

Meet Trixie, our kitty.  She turned 4 this January.

I love having a cat.  I love the attention we get from her and having a pet makes our family feel complete.

However I do not love having a litter box.  Our cat is indoor only so it’s not an option to not have one.  When we built our first home, a few years ago, we didn’t have any pets so designing a spot for a litter box wasn’t even on my mind.  When we got our first cat I was super bummed that there wasn’t a good spot in the house that would easily hide the pesky litter box.  So, when we went on the search to purchase another home, making sure there was a good spot to hide the litter box was at the top of my list.  I know, it’s a funny thing to have at the top of my house “must have” list, but it was important to me.  Being the clean freak that I am I do not want to see or step on any scattered litter from the cat box!

So here’s my solution, very simple but completely unnoticeable to our unknowing guests.

Do you see it?  Looks like a normal linen closet doesn’t it?  Look again…

There it is!  I get asked all the time, by our guests, “You have a cat?  Where is the litter box?”  It makes me so happy to hear that question because then I know my guests can’t smell it or see it, I mean really who wants to look at a litter box?

Here is how I created this perfectly hidden litter box:
1. When we moved into our house I bought a small tension rod and hung it up just below the bottom shelf of the linen closet.

2. Then I draped an old sheet over it to hide the litter box and block any unwanted smells from seeping up into the linen closet.  I have to say I’ve been very pleased with how well this has worked.

3. When we replaced our carpeting last fall I asked the installer to not carpet the linen closet.  Not having carpet in their has made it so easy to sweep/vacuum up the litter that comes out when my cat jumps out of the box!

Now that I have discovered the amazing odor control of Arm & Hammer Double Duty Clumping Cat Litter I could remove the sheet but my cat is pretty skittish so I think she appreciates the extra privacy of the sheet.
Where do you keep your litter box?  How do you make it disappear in your home?

I have this huge dome cat bos. I got it from petsmart years ago. It has a small staircase, (with bumps on it to help catch the litter) that goes in and to the right, so that way even I DON'T have to see the catbox. I then just put it in the utlility room. It has helped diminsh the stray cat litter by 80% and it is pretty PURPLE color too.=)

That's great! We have ours in the basement. Out of the way but I'm sure our cats don't appreciate having to walk downstairs. :)jackie at lilolu dot net

We are military so we move a lot and I'm always trying to find the right spot for our litter box (we have two 12 year old cats.) Our current home has a full bath downstairs and two full baths upstairs. I ended up putting the litter box inside of the downstairs bath/shower-our guests use an upstairs bath while they are visiting so the shower never gets used. A shower curtain hides it and if they get particularly stinky I can turn on the bathroom fan-plus hopping up out of the tub usually keeps the litter pieces from tracking out and I just sweep the tub out when I scoop it!

My husband and I have 2 cats and live in a 1 bed/1 bath apartment so you can imagine how important it is for us to keep the litter box clean and smell free. We can't make it "disappear" but have come as close as possible in the space we have. I can't wait to try the new Arm and Hammer litter! Anything that helps keep our little home stink free is welcome!

We don't really hide our litter box. It never smells, because it's a robotic box. It cycles 5 or 10 minutes after she uses it, dumping everything into a garbage bag lined tray beneath. We empty it once a week. The box is larger than a regular box, so it hides in our laundry room. Couldn't live without it!

Our farm style house here in Iowa has a great "mud room" in the back of the house. We have a baby gate to lock the dog in when we are away. The room has a closet with a sliding door. We put the kitty litter in the closet as well as her food. We keep the door open enough for the cat to get in and for the dog to stay out. I'm so thankful for this area that will keep our new baby out of the pet food and water as well. I love Arm and Hammer! kbeadner@gmail.com

I have 2 cats and the litter box is in the laundry room. I too had the where to put the litter box on the top of my list when we were looking for a new home several years ago. Loved you idea though! lbutler1@cfl.rr.com

How does your cat access the box when the linen closet is closed? Assuming you don't keep the door open all the time…We keep ours out in the open, but I know any day now the baby is going to notice it and we're going to have to find a new home for it. ElizabethIreneArnold at gmail dot com

Nice! I have had a hard time trying to hide ours– it used to be in the spare shower since we didn't use it anyway, but since we moved, I put it in the laundry room so I can sweep the floors!

You always come up with great ideas, love it!

  14. 14

I keep mine in the one of the closets with the door cracked.

  15. 15

I do not have a cat but I sure could spend $25 on Arm and Hammer products – love their laundry soap.

that's a great idea for the litter. we just have ours out in the upstairs bathroom, and it works fine, since guests don't usually go up there to use it. but if i had any closet space, i'd love to try putting it in there!

  21. 21

I am going to have to try this wonderful idea out! I am tired of seeing my cat's litter box

Great idea for hiding the litter box. I'm a little obsessive about keeping our house litter smell free too! Shellishellirose@insightbb.com

Having a cat in a small apartment was definitely a challenge for me, but I ended up with a similar solution – I put a covered litter box in a closet and just leave the door ajar so the cat can get in and out of the closet without it being obvious. Works great so far!rdoran1(at)gmail(dot)com

What a great idea Anna!!! And Id really LOVE to win the gift card!Taranickensfour@gmail.com

What a cute idea to hide the box! I know when we were looking for a new house, we were also thinking about where the litter box could go. Of course, our plan to have it in the basement didn't work so well with the cat, so we had to come up with an alternative. This is such a creative idea!

  26. 26

This is a great idea! We have two cats and two boxes, one downstairs in the laundry room and one upstairs in my craft room. We (my husband) clean them both least once a day. Neither are hidden. My problem isn't the smell it is the dust and the litter from their feet that bug me! I will have to look around the house and see if I can set something like this up for us!Tonyajastad at yahoo dot com

  27. 27

I love this idea! I could have done this in my apartment years ago. Now I have outdoor kitties but that would have saved me.

  28. 28

What a neat idea. I don't have an indoor kitty, but if I did I'd definately want to do something like this! Lovely giveaway! vintage precious at q dot com

This is a great idea for hiding the litter box! I have two kitties of my own! I would also love to win $25 toward Arm & Hammer products!

This is awesome. We have to have 2 litter boxes b/c we have 2 kitties. We have a good spot to keep the litter boxes out of the way, but I'd still like to hide them even more and your tension rod idea takes the cake! Thank you SOOOOO much! amandasadorables{at}hotmail.com

  31. 31

That's a really good idea. We have cats too, I would've never thought of that! Thanks for the tip.runningmatey at hotmail dot com

  32. 32

We don't hide ours, only because I can't find a good spot for it yet. I unfortunately don't have a closet I could use, although that is a great idea. I was considering buying a piece of furniture made specifically to hide the litter box.ketlawhon at yahoo dot com

  33. 33

I completely do not understand why in the world you would want your litter box in your linen closet!! That's gross, no matter how often you clean the box your still going to have odors seeping into your linens. I'd much rather leave it in the open than hide it my linen closet :/

  34. 34

    A very clever idea!

  35. 35

Great idea! I have 3 cats so I definitely understand the importance of a hidden litter box!

  36. 36

I have not found a place to hide my litterboxes, but when I move, I can gaurantee that is the top of my list also!missysaprons@yahoo.com

I have mine in the laundry room. I close the door but installed a cat door on the INSIDE laundry room door. We love it and the little kids stay out of it now.paulined@certifiedinsurance.net
